In fact, let’s talk about the ending that I have a love-hate relationship with. What about action? Oh sure, you have your typical fight scenes, but most of them don’t really contribute anything to the ending. Any tension? It’s pretty much escaped my notice. Duncan (#1 in a trilogy): 3/5 Stars + 4 SPICE “We’re all monsters, Nadya, some of us just hide it better than others.” Emily A. Duncan’s devastatingly Gothic Something Dark and Holy trilogy. In a centuries-long war where beauty and brutality meet, their three paths entwine in a shadowy world of spilled blood and mysterious saints, where a forbidden romance threatens to tip the scales between dark and light. Wicked Saints is the thrilling start to Emily A. Together, they must assassinate the king and stop the war. If you don’t usually read fantasy, stay away from this like it’s the plague.Ī girl who can speak to gods must save her people without destroying herself.Ī prince in danger must decide who to trust.Ī boy with a monstrous secret waits in the wings. If young adult fantasy is your jam, go ahead and take it for a test drive. Wicked Saints may have its twists and turns, but it’s not like you couldn’t see some of that stuff from a mile away. Even though the cover looks pretty, what’s inside is a mediocre fantasy that builds too heavily on preexisting books and is of questionable entertainment quality at best.
